Discards Systems

Dear David,
I was playing with a new partner who wanted to play a discard system whereby you
“discarded the suit below the suit you wanted led”.
I could not make it work. So I suggested that we play “Held” or “Low like High hate”.
We ended up playing two different discard systems.
My question is were we breaking the rules?
Answer
Yes, I am afraid you were. Each member of a partnership must play the same system, and that includes discards.
