If the opponents bid confidently

If the opponents bid confidently to game in a suit contract, and you have about fourteen points and a singleton in a side-suit, do not be tempted to lead your singleton. Your partner is unlikely to have many points and therefore is unlikely to gain the lead to give you a trick. By leading the singleton, you would probably be helping declarer set up a side suit.

Weak Jump Shifts

Hi David, I understand that weak jump shifts a should be alerted, so 1H - 2S (no opps bidding) should be alerted? Do you still alert after intervention, 1D - 1H (overcall) - 2 or 3S should the two or three spades be alerted?

Lead Up to Weakness

In general, a player sitting over dummy, and unsure which suit to lead, should lead up to dummy’s weakness in the hope or knowledge of leading up to partner’s honours in the suit.

For example (with North as the dummy):

East, on lead with no definitive information to guide him, should lead a heart. Any honours West has in hearts will be useful over South’s holding whereas it will be hard work to establish a spade trick in view of North’s strong spades.
