Hand Question 2
Minorwood?

I opened as East with 1D. South decided to pass. My partner went straight to 4NT and we ended in 6D as got too high. How should this be bid using Minorwood . Do you think South is too weak for Michaels?
Bernard's Answer
Minorwood is by agreement, and it would use 4C to ask for aces here - the problem with the bid is that if partner has two aces only, you have gone past 3NT - here that is OK, but had partner had short clubs and more flesh in the majors then 3NT might be favourite. I think best is to start slowly. If you play inverted minors, this is perfect for that convention - agreeing diamonds right away with 1d - 2d and then having a long discussion about the best contract. However, without that we would start naturally: 1D - 2C - 3C - at this point West knows of the double fit and will settle for a minor suit contract - what is the best bid? not easy - 4D is an option which, for me should be forcing and invite slam - East might well bid 4NT, but he only needs two key-cards, so he knows he can sing off in 5D if partner only has one. With 11 cards in the majors I might have made a Michaels bid here, and with partner holding a double fit, you can safely bid on to 5S - which might push EW up anyway.
